I’ll smell the lake and wonder if the saltwater in the air can somehow heal you.

I’ll always care, even when you forget. Even when you sharpen your teeth.

You lit the sidewalks up as you passed by. The dust turned to glitter. You walked where the sun beamed and I let it set for you every time. You remember, don’t you?

Tell me the truth. Tell me everything. Tell me when the ugly parts sank their teeth in. Tell me how the poison tastes. How’s it still feeding you after all this time ?

I miss different versions of your laughter. Girlhood daydreams. Shared secrets. The time we dyed your hair blue in your parents bathroom and the stains wouldn’t come out. Bonfire sunsets. Chasing the county line just to say we left- even for a moment.

I mean, how could you forget it? I’m spilling my mind out to you across the table and your watching my insides come undone with a blank stare. It’s just the way this goes.

It’s how you broke. But you didn’t shatter. You didn’t shatter. You didn’t fucking shatter.

You’re in the midst of falling apart. And that’s the worst part. I played my part. I did it well and you know it too. I’ll always listen for the laughter as I’m escaping into a slumber. I’ll smell the lake and wonder if the saltwater in the air can somehow heal you.

I’ll always care, even when you forget. Even when you sharpen your teeth. AMT
